Background and recording

After the release of their sixth studio album Liebe ist für alle da in 2009, Rammstein spent nearly a decade touring and performing at festivals, while members Till Lindemann and Richard Kruspe worked on side projects Lindemann and Emigrate. The band's untitled seventh studio album came out in May 2019, ending the long recording hiatus, and they began the Stadium Tour to support it. Kruspe had predicted three to four years of touring for that album.

The first European leg finished in August 2019, but the second leg, originally set for May 2020, was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting lockdowns in Europe and North America; both remaining legs were postponed first to 2021 and then to 2022. During the initial lockdown in Germany, Rammstein started writing new music to fill the gap left by the tour postponement. By September 2020, they returned to La Fabrique Studios in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France—where they had recorded the previous album—to record new material.

Keyboardist Christian "Flake" Lorenz described the sessions as spontaneous, noting that the lockdown gave the band more time to think and fewer distractions. Recording finished by February 2021. In October 2021, a song from the album was premiered when shared with astronaut Thomas Pesquet aboard the International Space Station.

Promotion and release

On 8 March 2022, Rammstein began posting clips on social media teasing new material with the hashtag "#ZEITkommt". The band announced the album Zeit on 10 March, simultaneously releasing the lead single "Zeit" and its music video directed by Robert Gwisdek, which features allegorical scenes about death and the passage of time. On 25 March, the band's website announced that 11 "Zeit capsules" had been placed in 11 cities worldwide, each containing a code.

A fan who found a capsule could enter the code on the website to reveal the title of an unreleased track and would receive two tickets to any Rammstein concert of their choice, plus travel and accommodations. In early April, the band teased the second single "Zick Zack" by opening a telephone hotline that gave the release date and portions of the song's instrumental and vocals. The single was released on 7 April 2022 with a music video. A CD release packaged with a teen-style magazine designed after the video came out on 14 April, along with a standard 7-inch vinyl.

Zeit was released on 29 April 2022 through Universal Music in physical and digital formats, including standard and deluxe CD digipaks and a double heavyweight vinyl. A listening event at selected movie theaters worldwide took place on 28 April. The cover art shows the band members walking down a staircase connected to the Trudelturm, a monument to aerial research at Aerodynamic Park in Adlershof, Berlin; the photograph was taken by Canadian musician Bryan Adams.
