Did You Know?
- From September to December 1999, the band rented the house Weimar in Heiligendamm on the Baltic Sea for pre-production.
- Sound recordings took place in May and June 2000 at Studio Miraval in southern France.
- On 3 April 2010 Rammstein posted a video with an official translation of "Halleluja" on their Facebook page "in light of recent events".
Versions
Mutter was released in several versions. The initial release included a normal CD and, in Germany, a vinyl LP. A digipack was exported to other countries, and a double CD edition with the "Sonne" video and the track "Halleluja" was released in the USA. The Japanese version places "Halleluja" as a hidden track after a two-minute silence. A limited tour edition features a red cover with an embossed Rammstein logo and a second CD with four live tracks. A 2013 vinyl pressing of the Japanese version is a bootleg or counterfeit, containing two versions of "Halleluja": one with choirs at the beginning and one without.
Critical reception and legacy
Rock Hard's 2005 book The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time placed Mutter at number 324. Producer Peter Tägtgren later recommended the album to beginners, praising its blend of orchestral parts, heavy guitars, and strong drum sound.
Track listing
Various editions of Mutter have different track listings. The Limited Tour Edition includes a second CD with live tracks: "Ich will" (3:57), "Links 2 3 4" (4:54), "Sonne" (4:42), and "Spieluhr" (5:27). The Japanese edition has "Halleluja" as a hidden track after "Nebel" with a two-minute silence intermission; this track later appeared on the Resident Evil soundtrack but not in the film. The limited edition has a second CD with only "Halleluja" and a CD-ROM area with the "Sonne" video; the back album track listing misspells it as "Hallelujah", while the bonus CD uses the correct spelling "Halleluja".
A 12" vinyl and MC version split tracks 1–6 on side A and 7–11 on side B. The Limited Tour Edition was also released as a double cassette set, with live tracks on sides A (1–2) and B (3–4). The Turkish cassette release fades all songs out at 3:44. Some copies with "Halleluja" as a hidden track cannot be played for unknown reasons.
