Last updated

René Corbet, a Canadian, was a professional ice hockey player in the NHL. Born June 25, 1973, he played for the Quebec Nordiques, Colorado Avalanche, Calgary Flames, and Pittsburgh Penguins before retiring.

Playing career

René Corbet got his start in the 1986 and 1987 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments, suiting up for the Longueuil Chevaliers Selects. The Quebec Nordiques picked him in the second round, 24th overall, in the 1991 NHL draft.

He put up big numbers in the QMJHL with the Drummondville Voltigeurs, taking home the Jean Béliveau Trophy in his final junior season in 1992–93. Corbet made his NHL debut in 1993–94, appearing in nine games for the Nordiques and notching a goal and an assist. He spent most of that season with Quebec’s AHL affiliate, the Cornwall Aces, where he won the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award, and he played eight more games for the Nordiques in their last season before the team moved.

After the franchise relocated to Denver, Corbet won the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in their first season, 1995–96. He carved out a regular role the next year, putting up 27 points in 76 games as the Avalanche claimed the Presidents’ Trophy.

In his fourth season with Colorado, on February 28, 1999, the team traded him, along with Wade Belak and Robyn Regehr, to the Calgary Flames for Theoren Fleury and Chris Dingman. Corbet finished that season with a career-high 31 points. He never matched his junior scoring touch, settling into a checking-line role, and after just 48 games with the Flames in 1999–2000, he was dealt again on March 14, 2000, this time with Tyler Moss to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Brad Werenka.

Corbet re-signed with the Penguins for the 2000–01 season. Injuries plagued him, costing him half the year, but he returned to help Pittsburgh reach the conference finals. In 2001, he moved to Germany to join Adler Mannheim of the DEL.

He spent eight seasons there, leaving as the franchise’s all-time leader in goals with 130 and captaining the team to a German Championship in 2007, plus two cup titles. On October 26, 2009, he signed with the Frisk Tigers of Norway’s GET-ligaen for the 2009–10 season. He inked a one-year extension for 2010–11 and retired at the end of that campaign.
