Lore & Background

Tricky Towers was developed after WeirdBeard's previous title 99 Bricks Wizard Academy was released in 2014. The game uses falling blocks similar to Tetris, but the goal is to stack blocks onto a tower rather than clear rows. Blocks may fall off the tower, and random events can alter physics, such as blocks doubling in size, becoming slippery, or dropping faster. Players control wizard avatars and compete against others in building tall, stable towers as quickly as possible. Spells are divided into Light magic (augmenting your tower) and Dark magic (interfering with opponents). The game has three multiplayer modes: Race, Survival, and Puzzle. Single-player challenges and single-player versions of Survival and Puzzle are also available; the Xbox version introduced a single-player Race mode later added to other platforms.

Reader's Guide

Tricky Towers is notable for repurposing the familiar falling-block mechanic into a physics-based tower-building competition, distinct from the row-clearing focus of Tetris. The game's three multiplayer modes—Race, Survival, and Puzzle—offer varied objectives: speed, careful placement, and creative engineering under height constraints. The inclusion of 18 spells split into Light and Dark magic adds strategic depth, allowing players to aid themselves or hinder opponents. The game's short, fast-paced rounds make it easy to pick up and play, particularly suited for couch multiplayer. After release, new languages and block skins were added, and an Indie Friends DLC featuring characters from other indie games was released on July 19, 2017. Reception varied by platform: PC and Switch versions were generally favorable, while PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions received mixed or average reviews. Nintendo Life praised the Switch version with 8/10, noting slim single-player offerings but recommending it for multiplayer and puzzle fans.
