Lore & Background
The town was first mentioned in Russian chronicles as Beryozovskoye in 1268. It was known as Koivisto in Finnish and Björkö in Swedish. The area was annexed by Sweden during the Third Swedish Crusade and ceded to Sweden in the Treaty of Nöteborg in 1323. Russia retook the area in 1721 after the Great Northern War, confirmed by the Treaty of Nystad. In 1918, it became part of independent Finland. After the Winter War, it was ceded to the Soviet Union, recaptured by Finland in 1941, and again ceded after the Moscow Armistice and the Paris Peace Treaty in 1947. On May 16, 1940, Koivisto became the administrative center of Koyvistovsky District and was granted town status. On October 1, 1948, it was renamed Primorsk. On January 4, 1957, Primorsk was transferred to Vyborgsky District.
