Confuciusornis

Confuciusornis is a genus of basal avialan theropod dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous Period of China, specifically the Yixian and Jiufotang Formations, dating to between 125 and 120 million years ago. It was roughly the size of a crow and, like modern birds, possessed a toothless beak. However, later birds more closely related to living species, such as *Hesperornis* and *Ichthyornis*, still retained teeth, indicating that tooth loss evolved independently in *Confuciusornis* and in the lineage leading to today’s birds. For a time, it was thought to be the oldest known bird with a beak, but that distinction now belongs to the earlier *Eoconfuciusornis*. The genus was named after the Chinese philosopher Confucius, and it is one of the most abundant vertebrates found in the Yixian Formation, with several hundred complete specimens recovered.
The first specimens were brought to paleontologists Hou Lianhai and Hu Yoaming in late 1993 by a fossil collector and a farmer, both from the Beipiao area. These, along with a third, were formally described in 1995 as the new species *Confuciusornis sanctus*, with the specific name meaning "holy one" in Latin, a reference to Confucius. The holotype consists of a partial skeleton with skull and forelimb parts, while the two paratypes initially comprised only bones not present in the holotype, making their referral speculative until many more complete specimens were found shortly after. Large-scale professional excavations beginning in 1997 at Sihetun, Beipiao, yielded hundreds of specimens. The abundance of fossils, often preserved in lake sediments deposited after volcanic eruptions, has led to the suggestion that entire flocks were killed simultaneously by ash, heat, or poisonous gas. While Chinese institutions hold many specimens, a greater number are held privately and are unavailable for research. Five additional species have been formally named, but only *C. sanctus* is universally accepted, with the others generally considered synonymous.
