Boverisuchus
An extinct crocodyliform with hoof-like toes and ziphodont teeth.
Boverisuchus was a small, extinct crocodyliform from the early to middle Eocene, with fossils found in Germany and western North America. It belonged to the group Planocraniidae. The genus was first named in 1938 by Oskar Kuhn, who described the type species *Boverisuchus magnifrons* from Germany alongside *Weigeltisuchus geiseltalensis*. For many years, most paleontologists considered both of these to be the same as *Pristichampsus rollinatii*, but a 2013 revision by Brochu found that *P. rollinatii* was based on poor material and was a nomen dubium, reinstating *Boverisuchus* as a valid genus. Brochu also assigned *Crocodylus vorax* (often called *Pristichampsus vorax* since 1975) as a second species, *B. vorax*. Material from the middle Eocene of Italy and Texas may represent an additional, unnamed species. Two Asian species of *Planocrania* were found to be closely related to *Boverisuchus*, leading to the reinstatement of the family Planocraniidae.
Phylogenetic analyses based on physical features often place Planocraniidae near the base of the crocodilian family tree, just outside the group Brevirostres (which includes alligators, caimans, and crocodiles but not gharials). However, DNA studies have found Brevirostres invalid, showing crocodiles and gavialids are more closely related than alligators. A 2018 study by Lee & Yates, using molecular, morphological, and stratigraphic data, instead placed planocraniids outside the crown group Crocodylia. A 2021 study by Rio & Mannion, using a heavily modified dataset, recovered Planocraniidae within Crocodylia as the sister group to Longirostres, noting the difficulty in reaching a consensus.
Like other planocraniids, *Boverisuchus* is thought to have had heavily armored skin and long limbs suited for running. Its hoof-like toes suggest a mostly terrestrial lifestyle, hunting mammals on land rather than in water. Its teeth were ziphodont—sharp, laterally compressed, and serrated—similar to those of certain theropod dinosaurs, which initially led paleontologists to mistakenly believe some non-avian dinosaurs survived the extinction event. The tail was round in cross-section and lacked the osteoderm crest seen in modern crocodiles, more like a dinosaur’s tail, and the animal could likely gallop.
The North American species *B. vorax* is known from the Bridger Formation, where it lived alongside large predatory mammals like the mesonychids *Harpagolestes* and *Mesonyx* and the oxyaenid *Patriofelis*. Stomach contents show it preyed on the tapiroid *Helaletes*.

Based on other planocraniids, Boverisuchus is assumed to have had heavily armoured skin, and long limbs suggesting a cursorial (i.e. running) habitus. It also had hoof-like toes, suggesting that it lived more on land than in the water, and that it therefore probably hunted terrestrial mammals. The teeth of Boverisuchus were ziphodont; i.e., laterally compressed, sharp, and with serrated edges. Due to their similarity to those of certain theropod dinosaurs they were initially mistaken for theropod teeth, leading paleontologists to believe that some non-avian dinosaurs survived the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. Some material referred to Pristichampsus rollinatii shows further features adapting the animal to this lifestyle, including a tail round in cross-section and lacking the osteoderm crest observed in extant crocodile species, and the ability to gallop.
