The Temple of Evil

A gothic portal that walks through Angel Grove, spitting out Putties and swallowing hope.

The Temple of Evil is the sinister stronghold from which Rita Repulsa commands her army of mindless Putties and plots the subjugation of Angel Grove. Serving as a living portal to a shadowy alternate dimension, it is the primary antagonist base the Power Rangers must storm time and again throughout the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series.

Rather than a fixed building on any single street, the Temple manifests wherever Rita wills it to appear, shifting its location from episode to episode. This dimensional instability makes it both a recurring battleground and a symbol of the Evil Empire's refusal to be pinned down or defeated permanently.

Lore & Background

The Temple of Evil is less a building than a wound in reality. Rita Repulsa, the ancient sorceress who once ruled a now-doomed civilization, uses it as both throne room and summoning engine. Within its crumbling arches and obsidian corridors, she animates clay-like Putties, issues her cackling commands, and watches the Rangers' every move through scrying pools and crystal orbs. The structure's architecture blends gothic spires with organic, almost fleshy textures, as though the building itself is alive and hungry.

Because the Temple is a dimensional rift rather than a physical structure, it can be torn down only temporarily. The Rangers' combined attacks and Zord assaults may shatter its walls for a few episodes, but Rita simply re-opens the portal elsewhere, and the Temple reassembles with fresh Putties and a new scheme. This cycle of destruction and return gives the location a mythic, almost cursed quality in the narrative.

In the later arc of the series, Lord Zedd—Rita's more powerful master—takes a more prominent role within the Temple, elevating its threat level and introducing more sophisticated villains alongside the Putties. The Temple thus evolves from a simple minion factory into a full command center for the Evil Empire's escalating war against the Rangers.

In Their Own Story

The fog rolled off the pond in a thick grey sheet, and where it thinned, the Temple's black spires rose like broken teeth against the night sky. Tommy gripped his staff, knuckles white, as a Putty's wet footsteps echoed from the courtyard. Rita's laughter drifted down from the upper gallery—thin, reedy, triumphant. She held the morphing grid's echo in her palm, a sliver of stolen light. "Tonight, little rangers," she purred, "you will kneel in the mud and thank me for the privilege." The Putty lunged. Tommy didn't wait. The staff blazed green, and the fog split in two.

Reader's Guide

Visually, the Temple of Evil is a towering gothic structure of black stone and dark iron, crowned with crooked spires and arched windows that glow with a sickly green or violet light. Its walls seem to shift and breathe, and the entrance is often framed by twisted pillars or a massive archway. The interior is a cavernous hall with a raised dais where Rita stands, flanked by rows of identical Putties in their grey, featureless forms.

The Temple is controlled entirely by Rita Repulsa (and, in later storylines, Lord Zedd). It is not staffed by any loyal human allies in the early series; the Putties are its only workers, mindless and obedient. The location's narrative significance is enormous: nearly every episode's climax or mid-episode confrontation takes place within its walls. It is where the Rangers learn the details of the week's plot, where Rita reveals new minions or schemes, and where the Zords are deployed for the big set-piece battles.

Its special property is dimensional transience. The Temple does not exist in one fixed place; it is a rift that Rita can open and close at will, manifesting in a park, a parking lot, a beach, or a forest clearing. This means the Rangers can never simply "demolish it and move on"—it will reappear. The rules of the dimension also mean that damage inflicted inside the Temple sometimes carries over into the real world (craters, debris), while the structure itself reconstitutes. This makes it more than a backdrop: it is an active, hostile environment that resists being permanently destroyed.
