Gustave Le Bon

Charles-Marie Gustave Le Bon (7 May 1841 – 13 December 1931) was a French polymath active across anthropology, psychology, sociology, medicine, invention, and physics. He remains most famous for his 1895 book *The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind*, a foundational text in crowd psychology.

Born in Nogent-le-Rotrou, Le Bon earned a medical degree from the University of Paris in 1866 but never practiced as a physician, instead launching a writing career that same year. After the Franco-Prussian War broke out, he served in the French Army, and his experiences of defeat and the 1871 Paris Commune profoundly shaped his thinking. He then traveled extensively through Europe, Asia, and North Africa, studying peoples and civilizations through an anthropological lens, developing an essentialist view of humanity, and inventing a portable cephalometer.

In the 1890s, Le Bon shifted focus to psychology and sociology, producing his most influential works. He argued that crowds form a distinct psychological entity governed by a "racial unconscious," rather than simply being the sum of their individual members. Concurrently, he conducted physics experiments and wrote popular science books, predicting mass–energy equivalence and the Atomic Age. He maintained these diverse interests until his death in 1931.

During his lifetime, many in the French academic and scientific establishment dismissed or ignored Le Bon due to his conservative and reactionary political views, including his criticism of majoritarianism and socialism.
