George Friedman, born February 1, 1949, in Budapest, Hungary, is an American futurologist, political scientist, and writer specializing in geopolitical analysis. His family immigrated to the United States, a journey he has characterized as a classic refugee story, and he was raised in New York City. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the City College of New York and a Ph.D. in government from Cornell University. Friedman spent nearly two decades in academia, teaching political science at Dickinson College, before shifting his focus to geopolitical forecasting. In 1996, he founded Stratfor, a private intelligence and forecasting firm based in Austin, Texas, where he served as CEO and Chief Intelligence Officer until his resignation in May 2015. That same year, he established Geopolitical Futures, where he serves as chairman. Friedman is best known for his 1991 book *The Coming War With Japan*, co-authored with his wife Meredith LeBard, which predicted a military conflict between the United States and Japan around 2020; this war did not occur. His reputation as a forecaster led *The New York Times Magazine* to compare him to a Magic 8 Ball. During his tenure at Stratfor, Friedman oversaw the company’s Decade Forecasts, which attempted to predict long-term global trends based on geography, demography, and national interest. These forecasts included several notable inaccuracies: they repeatedly predicted China’s disintegration or economic crisis, which did not happen; failed to anticipate the rise of Islamist terrorism and the impact of 9/11; and forecast the collapse of the European Union by 2015, which did not occur.
