Gameplay
Pokémon Trading Card Game Online brings the physical card game to screens, mixing in role-playing touches that recall the main Pokémon video games. Players build 60-card decks and go up against computer opponents or real people. The Trainer Challenge mode pits players against computer-controlled rivals using preset theme decks, and winning enough matches rewards them with booster packs—this is the easiest mode, making it a good starting point for newcomers. Versus Mode is for player-versus-player battles, where victories earn tokens, tournament entry tickets, and Versus Points. Those points feed into a Versus Ladder that refreshes every three weeks, wiping all points and introducing new prizes. Within Versus Mode, there are four play styles. Theme mode only allows pre-built theme decks. Standard mode limits decks to cards from the current standard rotation, with older cards retired each year. Expanded mode opens up cards from the expanded rotation. Unlimited mode lets players use any card ever released, but it is only available in Friend Battles or training against a computer opponent. Tournament mode runs eight-player single-elimination brackets, with better prizes for higher finishes. Anyone who wins at least one match in a ticket-entry tournament gets a tradable booster pack. Tokens from matches can be spent in the in-game shop on untradable items like regular booster packs, pre-built theme decks, or avatar customization pieces. The game started with three starter decks and added more content later. From April 6, 2011, players could buy cards from the Black and White series that came with codes to unlock digital versions. Booster pack codes originally let players buy packs up to Black and White—Boundaries Crossed from the online shop, but starting with Black and White—Plasma Storm, the code cards inside physical booster packs directly unlock the same set’s online booster packs.
