Pokémon Sleep
A sleep-tracking game that rewards rest with Pokémon encounters.
Pokémon Sleep is a mobile app that tracks how long and how well you sleep, then rewards you with Pokémon based on your sleep quality. It launched on July 17, 2023, for Android and iOS in Japan, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and several Latin American countries.
The game uses your phone’s microphone and accelerometer to monitor sleep. You can also use the Pokémon Go Plus+ accessory, which plays bedtime reminders and tracks sleep without needing the phone nearby. In September 2024, smartwatches became a supported tracking method.
When you start, Professor Neroli gives you a Snorlax to observe. You feed it berries and meals during the day. The more you feed it, the higher its power becomes, which attracts more kinds of Pokémon. Reaching certain power milestones raises Snorlax’s rank, bringing rarer Pokémon after each sleep session.
After sleeping, you get a report that sorts your sleep into three types: Dozing, Snoozing, or Slumbering. Whichever type makes up most of your sleep determines your overall sleep type—unless they’re equal, which gives a “Balanced Type.” The report also notes how much noise you made. These factors combine into a Sleep Score.
Your Sleep Score is multiplied by Snorlax’s score to produce Drowsy Power. Higher Drowsy Power means more Pokémon visit you. Pokémon are also grouped into the same three sleep types, so the type of sleep you had influences which Pokémon appear. Each Pokémon has multiple sleep styles recorded in the Sleep-Style Dex. You can feed visiting Pokémon PokéBiscuits to build friendship, and once enough friendship is earned, the Pokémon joins your team to collect berries and ingredients.
The game runs in-game events tied to holidays, lunar phases, or the introduction of new Pokémon and items.
Pokémon Sleep was developed by Japanese studio Select Button and published by The Pokémon Company. It was announced on May 28, 2019, by CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara during a Tokyo press conference and on the company’s Twitter. Originally planned for 2020, it went silent until April 5, 2021, when a fan spotted an SSL certificate for dev-eotxawxn.sleep.pokemon.co.jp. In January 2022, a Pokémon Go APK data mine revealed integration features like connecting to the Pokémon Go Plus+ accessory, reviewing sleep patterns, and earning in-app rewards.
