Shinji Miyazaki

Last updated

Shinji Miyazaki is a Japanese composer and arranger, born in Kobe and raised across several areas on the island of Shikoku. His childhood exposure to pop music via a neighbor's shortwave radio sparked a lasting interest, leading him to study musical arrangement and piano instruction at the Shobi College of Music.

After some hesitation, he committed to a career as an arranger and later a composer. His work centers on anime scores, most famously the Crayon Shin-chan series and the Pokémon anime and its films from 1997 to 2019. His compositions often feature string and brass instruments, especially the french horn, and draw from J-Pop, American pop, and jazz, particularly the work of Gil Evans.

Style and methods

Miyazaki composes using a variety of methods, often working from sudden flashes of inspiration. When a deadline looms and a piece remains unfinished, he distracts himself by looking at something he finds beautiful or unusual. His inspirations are rooted in the radio songs of his youth, especially the compositions of Tōru Takemitsu. He listens to enka, kayōkyoku, classical music, jazz, and general American-style pop.

For relaxation, he turns to African-American music from the 1960s and 1970s. He also cites Gil Evans and John Williams as influences. Notably, Miyazaki admits he does not play the piano well, even though composing on it is his job.
