Gameplay
Guns of Icarus Online is a steampunk/dieselpunk multiplayer first-person shooter focused on airship combat. Each airship is controlled by up to four players, with each crew member taking a specific role. Players can choose from three classes: gunner, engineer, or pilot, each granting access to different tools. The captain of each ship selects which weapons the ship uses. Several ships are available: the Galleon is the largest and most resilient but slowest, emphasizing high firepower and tank capabilities with strong hull armor. The Squid is the fastest ship, allowing outmaneuvering of enemies, but is the least resilient and lacks a Heavy Weapon slot. The Goldfish has a main gun on its prow, two secondary guns on port and starboard sides, and another at the rear, relying on moderate speed and high maneuverability. The Junker has five small weapon mountings, high maneuverability, and low speed. The Pyramidion has two guns on the top deck and two on the low deck, offering very high damage output but low turning speed. The Spire has very high turning speed but very low linear speed, with high damage per second and very low hull armor. The Mobula has five weapons on the front and none on the sides or back, with great vertical movement but difficulty repairing during battle. The Alliance add-on, in development since late 2013, launched on March 31, 2017, adding several PvE game modes and a faction war gameplay system where players play matches to earn war effort for their faction to take over or defend land on a map. At Alliance's launch, it contained four joinable factions and four new playable ships, with two more factions and their exclusive ships added in updates through spring and summer 2017. One new ship, the Magnate, belongs to the Mercantile Guild faction; it is slow-moving but has three guns on each side—two light gun mountings and one heavy—allowing high damage per second.
