Gameplay

Deadliest Warrior: Legends is a three-dimensional weapons-based fighting game with realistic damage. Warriors are divided into three classes: heavily armored champions, aggressive berserkers, or agile guerrillas. Each warrior has three weapon categories: close range (one handed), mid-range (two handed), and long range (limited projectiles). Changes from the previous game include the removal of the health bar, and the ability to turn off stamina, projectile count, and the timer entirely. Guerrillas no longer have a slow-acting poison for their secondary projectile weapon. A new push ability allows players to kill opponents by sending them down holes in some arenas or to create distance. Grappling replaces special weapons; if an attack connects, the player enters a rock-paper-scissors mode. If the defending opponent matches the attacker's input, the attack is blocked; otherwise, a leg-break, arm-break, or execution occurs depending on the button chosen. A new Risk-like mode called Generals was added, where opposing warriors wage war by commanding their armies. The simulation engine from season 3 of the show factors in each warrior's strengths and weaknesses (called X-factors). Each warrior (excluding Mack) has a playable map covering one of their campaigns. Upon taking a fort with troops, the player must defeat its warrior in hand-to-hand combat. Taking a neutral fort before the opponent grants one of three upgraded abilities. To win, the player must take over the opposing player's home fort and best them in an individual battle.

Warriors

If the player has a file of the previous game on their hard drive, they gain exclusive access to a variant of each warrior's starting short- or mid-range weapon, either the warrior's personal weapon or that of a related warrior, all with the same stats as the corresponding starter weapon. Joke weapons, drawn from each warrior's history and causing little damage, are also unlockable. Warriors playable at launch are William Wallace, Shaka Zulu, Attila the Hun, Alexander the Great, Vlad the Impaler, Sun Tzu, Genghis Khan, Hannibal, Hernán Cortés, and Joan of Arc. Joan of Arc and co-host Richard "Mack" Machowicz, initially only unplayable opponents, became playable through DLC released on August 10 for the Xbox 360 and on August 30 for the PS3.

Compilation

Spike announced on September 26, 2011, that Deadliest Warrior: The Game and Deadliest Warrior: Legends would be bundled together as Deadliest Warrior: Ancient Combat. This disc adds 30 new weapons (one per category for each of the ten Legends), a Graveyard arena, and fresh gameplay modes. It also includes previously unaired episodes from all three seasons of the TV show. Originally set for release on December 6, 2011, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the date was moved to January 10, 2012, and then to April 17.
