Gameplay
Let's Make a Soccer Team! blends a football management sim with role-playing game elements, telling a continuous story with characters while you run the club. Unlike typical manager games, you take on the role of the club's founder and chairperson, handling duties similar to a director of football. The game includes 439 real-world club teams, most without official licenses, though player rosters are covered by the FIFPRO license. UEFA club tournaments appear in unlicensed form, and there are a few fictional friendly tournaments. Six leagues are playable—England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands—all set in the 2005-06 season. You can create teams based in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, or Monaco, but they will compete in the English or French league systems respectively. Only the Spanish and Dutch leagues are fully licensed. Italy is mostly licensed, but Palermo, Siena, and Cagliari are unlicensed Serie A teams, and six Serie B teams plus the Italian league names are unlicensed. Juventus has official licensing, and their home matches use the Stadio Delle Alpi. A Versus Mode lets you pick any of the 439 clubs or in-game national teams to simulate friendly matches and custom tournaments. Teams you create in the main game can be imported into Virtua Pro Football, and players from a completed Virtua Pro Football career can be imported into Let's Make a Soccer Team! as youth players.
Plot
The story begins with a brief introduction on the history of football, after which the player creates their own club. Newspaper headlines chronicle the team's formation and rise to the third tier of its country's league system, and introduce the main antagonist: a local business tycoon who plans to take over and merge a football club into his conglomerate, Big Bang Konzern. The playoffs to the second tier and the first pre-season act as a tutorial, continuing until most features unlock in August of the 2006–07 season. If the player's club is knocked out of the initial playoffs, the tycoon buys the club, triggering an early game over. Otherwise, the rival buys a different club from the same hometown that earned automatic promotion, starting a local rivalry that lasts for the rest of the game.
