Fagaceae
A woody plant family of beeches, chestnuts, and oaks.
The Fagaceae (named from the Latin for beech tree) are a family of flowering plants that includes beeches, chestnuts, and oaks. The family contains eight genera and roughly 1,000 or more species. In temperate regions, most Fagaceae are deciduous, while in the tropics they are often evergreen trees or shrubs. Their leaves are alternate, simple, and have pinnate venation, often lobed, with both petioles and stipules usually present. Flowers are unisexual and arranged in catkins. The fruit is a nut surrounded by a cup-like structure called a cupule. These nuts lack endosperm and sit inside a scaly or spiny husk that may cover the nut fully or partially; each nut can contain one to seven seeds. For oaks (genus *Quercus*), the fruit is a non-valved nut, usually with one seed, known as an acorn. In most oaks, the husk forms only a cup around the base of the nut, while other members of the family enclose the nut completely.
Ecologically, Fagaceae is one of the most important woody plant families in the Northern Hemisphere. Oaks are a key component of temperate forests across North America, Europe, and Asia, and they are a major source of food for wildlife. Introduced diseases have caused declines in some Fagaceae populations. The wood, bark, nuts, and aesthetic value of these plants also have economic importance. They contain chemicals such as tannins and antioxidants, which humans have traditionally used for medicine and clothing.
**Classification**
The family is usually divided into five or six subfamilies, with eight to ten genera generally recognized. Both morphological traits (especially fruit structure) and molecular data strongly support the monophyly of Fagaceae. The Southern Hemisphere genus *Nothofagus* (southern beeches) was once placed in Fagaceae as a sister to *Fagus*, but recent molecular evidence indicates otherwise. Although *Nothofagus* shares some features with Fagaceae, such as cupule fruit structure, it differs in stipule and pollen morphology and in chromosome number. Botanists now place *Nothofagus* in its own family, Nothofagaceae.
**Subfamilies and genera**
Two subfamilies are recognized:
**Fagoideae** (monotypic) - *Fagus* L.—beeches; about 10–13 species, found in north temperate east Asia, southwest Asia, Europe, and eastern North America.
**Quercoideae** - *Castanea* Mill. 1754—chestnuts; eight species, north temperate east Asia, southwest Asia, southeast Europe, eastern North America. - *Castanopsis* (D. Don) Spach 1841—chinquapins; about 125–130 species, southeast Asia. - *Chrysolepis* Hjelmq. 1948—golden chinkapins; two species, western United States. - *Lithocarpus* Blume 1826—stone oaks; about 330–340 species, warm temperate to tropical Asia. - *Notholithocarpus* P.S. Manos, C.H. Cannon & S.H. Oh 2008—tanoaks; one species (formerly *Lithocarpus densiflorus*), endemic to California and southwest Oregon. - *Quercus* L. 1753—oaks; about 600 species, widespread across the Northern Hemisphere, crossing the equator in Indonesia. - *Trigonobalanus* Forman 1962—three species, tropical southeast Asia and northern South America (Colombia).
The *Quercus* subgenus *Cyclobalanopsis* is treated as a distinct genus in the Flora of China, but as a section or subgenus by most taxonomists.
**Distribution**
Fagaceae are widely distributed across the Northern Hemisphere. The highest genus-level diversity is in Southeast Asia, where most living genera are thought to have evolved before migrating to Europe and North America via the Bering Land Bridge. Species such as *Fagus grandifolia*, *Castanea dentata*, and *Quercus alba* in the northeastern United States, or *Fagus sylvatica*, *Quercus robur*, and *Q. petraea* in Europe, are often ecologically dominant in northern temperate forests. More than 400 species of Fagaceae—mostly *Castanopsis* and *Lithocarpus*—grow in Southeast Asia, with some species playing similarly dominant roles over large areas.
**Ecology**
Fagaceae is diverse in both temperate and tropical climates across both hemispheres. In temperate forests, the family is important because it makes up many individuals in the ecosystem. Temperate species are often wind-pollinated, while tropical trees are often insect-pollinated. Oak acorns are eaten and dispersed by mammals and birds; mice, for example, may store seeds for later consumption. Many temperate Fagaceae are deciduous, dropping their leaves seasonally to survive cold conditions. Leaf litter decomposes slowly, depositing nutrients like nitrogen back into the soil, and the moist, dark conditions it creates reduce herb germination while providing habitat for insects, worms, and fungi. Many Fagaceae species are evergreen, keeping their leaves year-round. In China, southern Japan, and Korea, evergreen Fagaceae dominate subtropical forests. *Quercus* species are known to hybridize where their ranges overlap, yet they still maintain distinct species.
**Changes in ecology**
In temperate forests, Fagaceae populations in Europe and East Asia are gradually increasing as trees from the Pinaceae family decrease. Chestnut species in North America and Europe have experienced population declines due to the introduced disease chestnut blight, which kills saplings before they can grow large enough to produce flowers or nuts, reducing the food and habitat they once provided. *Quercus* and *Lithocarpus* species in North America have also seen population declines due to the disease sudden oak death, first recorded in the region.
