Grace Shelby Death Arc

A gunshot at a charity dinner ends Tommy Shelby's marriage to Grace.

Grace Shelby's death comes in the third series of Peaky Blinders, set in 1924, soon after she and Tommy marry. At the Shelby Charity Foundation dinner, while she wears a sapphire necklace Tommy gave her, a man shouts 'For Angel!' and shoots her dead. The killing is ordered by Vicente Changretta, head of an Italian crime family.

Lore & Background

The sapphire had been paid to Tommy by Grand Duke Leon Romanov for killing Anton Kaledin, and Tatiana Petrovna tells Tommy it is cursed; Tommy is trying to persuade Grace to take it off when she is shot. Afterwards he takes the necklace to Wales and asks a Romani woman, Bethany Boswell, whether it is cursed, leaving it with her. Grace's death sets off the Changretta feud: Vicente is killed, and in the fourth series his son Luca comes from New York to take revenge on the Shelbys.

Reader's Guide

Annabelle Wallis plays Grace in series 1 to 3 and again in series 5, when a hallucination of Grace tells Tommy 'the work's all done' before he points a gun at his own head. In the sixth series Tommy learns that Bethany Boswell had passed the cursed sapphire on to Evadne Barwell, whom he comes to blame for his daughter Ruby's illness.
