Sony Interactive Entertainment
Global leader in video game consoles and digital entertainment.
Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC (SIE) is a video game and digital entertainment company owned by the Japanese Sony Group Corporation, based in the United States. It is best known for running the PlayStation line of consoles and products, and it holds the top spot in the global video game industry by revenue and equity investments.
The company’s roots go back to 1993, when Sony and Sony Music Entertainment Japan set up Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) in Tokyo. That division launched the original PlayStation in Japan in 1994, then in the United States and Europe the following year. In 2010, Sony split its operations and created Sony Network Entertainment International (SNEI) in California, which handled online services like the PlayStation Network, the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Plus, and Media Go. Then, in 2016, SCE and SNEI merged to form Sony Interactive Entertainment, with its headquarters announced to be in the United States.
**History**
**Sony Computer Entertainment founding, PlayStation release, and North American expansion (1993–2005)**
Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. (SCEI) was founded in 1993 by Sony and its subsidiary Sony Music Entertainment Japan to enter the video game business. The first PlayStation console came out in Japan on December 3, 1994. The North American branch, Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA), started in May 1994 as part of Sony Electronic Publishing, based in Foster City, California, and led by Steve Race. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe was set up in London on January 6, 1995, as a unit of Sony Electronic Publishing Ltd; according to *Next Generation* magazine, most of its early development staff were recent college graduates with little gaming industry experience.
Just before the PlayStation’s Western release, operations were reorganized: in July 1995, all video game marketing from Sony Imagesoft moved into SCEA, and most affected employees relocated from Santa Monica to Foster City. On August 7, 1995, Race unexpectedly quit and became CEO of Spectrum HoloByte three days later; Martin Homlish, a Sony Electronics veteran, took over, starting a period of high executive turnover. The PlayStation launched in the United States on September 9, 1995.
