Release and promotion
The film was first announced by Phil Harvey in April 2012 under the title "ColdplayFilm". That name also appeared on the Xylobands used on the tour between April and September 2012; those bracelets were created for Live 2012 and later used on all subsequent Coldplay world tours with variations. The project was officially announced on 25 September 2012, the same day two promotional websites launched—one for the theatrical release and one for the overall project. A two-minute trailer was released online and shown in theaters, and an exclusive preview of "Us Against the World" plus another select track were made available on the Live 2012 website. A 183-page eBook documenting the tour was also announced. The film had an exclusive one-night theatrical release across 57 countries on 13 November 2012, with screenings at 7:00pm (7:30pm at some venues) and a second showing before midnight. A partnership between Parlophone and Studio 3 brought the film to US premium cable television on Epix, airing on 14 November 2012.
Critical reception
Live 2012 received widespread acclaim from music critics. Cameron Adams of Herald Sun praised the show and track listing, noting that the biggest hits sit well with more subversive tracks. Sarah Milton of The Upcoming wrote that the release takes tracks to a personal level with fans, a skill few achieve live, and that Coldplay succeeds in raising the bar for stadium rock shows. Jim Pusey of Contactmusic commended the visual effects and cinematography, comparing the film to Live 2003 and observing a band that is less awkward and self-conscious. He found the behind-the-scenes interludes the most interesting parts, as each band member reveals their enthusiasm and perspective on the tour, making the gig footage from three different stops more engaging. Kenji Lloyd of HeyUGuys! stated that the film goes above and beyond any ordinary concert film, as expected from a band that always makes extra effort. Drew Taylor of IndieWire claimed the documentary should be longer but that even a cursory understanding of watching Coldplay live is better than nothing. James Atherton of Drowned in Sound gave a less enthusiastic review, saying the band's output is often too sanitised to go from good to great, though he noted guitarist Jonny Buckland's comment that this tour was the first time the band felt ready to play stadiums.
