New World
A medieval fantasy realm forever changed by the arrival of an undead overlord.
The New World serves as the primary setting for the majority of the narrative following the shutdown of YGGDRASIL. It is a high-fantasy realm distinct from the game world, characterized by medieval technology and active magic systems. Indigenous races here were unaware of digital avatars until the arrival of Momonga, who found himself trapped in his skeletal Lich form after staying logged in until the scheduled server shutdown. This reality operates under natural laws where NPCs have gained sentience and free will, forcing the guild leader to navigate a world that defies his game mechanics while searching for other players.
Lore & Background
Unlike the game server, this reality operates on natural laws where magic is still based on a system (tier magic, etc.) and can be learned, not solely innate talent. The inhabitants revere deities and fear demons as tangible threats. Magic casters are rare individuals capable of altering reality with spells, yet they pale in comparison to the overlord's capabilities. This disparity creates a geopolitical crisis where ancient religions struggle to explain the sudden appearance of an immortality-wielding emperor who demonstrates no moral qualms with killing due to in-game behavioral modifications.
Reader's Guide
This realm acts as the crucible for Ainz Ooal Gown’s ambitions after being transported from YGGDRASIL. It is not merely a backdrop but an active antagonist, with political factions constantly vying for dominance across multiple continents. The story explores how an entity of immense power interacts with societies built on fragile human hierarchies and religious dogma. Every region offers unique cultural flavors, from the decadent nobility of the Empire to the rigid religious order of the Theocracy, all now threatened by an undead emperor seeking a home for his guildmates.

Origins and Publication History
The intellectual property known as Overlord originated as an online serialization by author Kugane Maruyama with illustrations by so-bin, debuting on the Arcadia website in 2010. Following its initial digital run, the series gained traction on Shōsetsuka ni Narō before being acquired by Enterbrain for official publication. The first physical volume launched on July 30, 2012, initiating a long-running print saga that has since expanded to sixteen volumes as of July 29, 2022. In the afterword in the second part of the sixteenth volume, it was announced that the narrative would conclude with an eighteenth and final volume. The series achieved international recognition when Yen Press secured the North American license in October 2015, releasing the first English translation on May 24, 2016.
Core Narrative Premise
Set against the backdrop of the year 2126, the story centers on YGGDRASIL, a revolutionary Full-Dive VRMMORPG renowned for its deep player interaction. As the game's servers prepare for shutdown after twelve years, the guild Ainz Ooal Gown has dwindled from forty-one members to just four, with only the skeletal Lich avatar Momonga remaining active at their headquarters, The Great Tomb of Nazarick. When the server closure time arrives unexpectedly without disconnecting players, Momonga discovers he is trapped in his avatar form within a new, unknown world where game NPCs have gained sentience and life.
Unable to log out or access standard player functions, he adopts the guild name Ainz Ooal Gown as his identity. His primary objectives shift from gaming to survival and investigation: searching for other stranded players while ensuring the safety of Nazarick, all while grappling with behavioral modifications that strip away real-world moral qualms regarding violence.
Anime Adaptation Evolution
Madhouse produced a highly successful anime television adaptation consisting of four distinct seasons, each comprising thirteen episodes. The inaugural season aired between July 7 and September 29, 2015. Two compilation films recapping those initial events were released in Japan on February 25, 2017 (Overlord: The Undead King) and March 11, 2017 (Overlord: The Dark Warrior). A second season premiered on January 9, 2018, followed by a third on July 10, 2018. After a significant gap, the fourth season aired from July 5 to September 27, 2022. In addition to the main series, an anime film titled Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom premiered with regular screenings in Japan on September 20, 2024. Distribution rights evolved over time; while Funimation initially handled simulcasts outside Asia, licensing eventually shifted to Crunchyroll following Sony's acquisition of the platform.
Manga Expansions and Spin-offs
The visual storytelling of Overlord extends significantly through manga adaptations that complement the light novels. The primary adaptation, written by Satoshi Ōshio with art by Hugin Miyama, began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten's Comp Ace magazine on November 26, 2014, and concluded its run on May 25, 2023. Building on this success, a sequel manga titled Overlord New World was launched in the same magazine on April 26, 2024, illustrated by Matsuki. Furthermore, the universe found unique expression through Isekai Quartet, a comedy crossover anime featuring chibi-style versions of Overlord characters interacting with protagonists from KonoSuba, Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, and The Saga of Tanya the Evil. This series began airing on April 9, 2019.
