**Heteropteryx** is a genus of stick insect that contains just one species, *Heteropteryx dilatata*, and lends its name to the family Heteropterygidae. This single species goes by several common names—jungle nymph, Malaysian stick insect, Malayan jungle nymph, or Malayan wood nymph—and is often kept in zoos and private insect enclosures because of its impressive size. It is native to the Malay Archipelago and active at night.

Females are much larger and heavier than males, measuring 14 to 17 centimeters long and weighing 30 to 65 grams, which places them among the heaviest stick insects and living insects overall. Most females are lime green, but yellow and rarely red-brown individuals also occur. Both pairs of wings are shortened; the green forewings (tegmina) cover the shorter, bright pink hind wings (alae) when at rest, though the insect cannot fly. The head, body, and legs are covered in spines, especially along the body edges, abdomen, and hind legs. At the rear of the abdomen is a secondary ovipositor used to deposit eggs into the ground, formed ventrally from the eighth sternite (the subgenital plate or operculum) and dorsally from the eleventh tergum (the supraanal plate or epiproct). Males are slender, only 9 to 13 centimeters long, and also spiny. They are usually mottled brown, with hind wings that cover the entire abdomen. Their narrow forewings have a pale front edge, creating light stripes along the mesonotum and half the abdomen when the wings are closed. The fully developed hind wings are reddish with a brown net-like pattern.

*Heteropteryx dilatata* is found across the Malay Archipelago, including the Malay Peninsula, Thailand, Singapore, Sumatra, and Sarawak on Borneo. Whether animals recorded in Madagascar represent a native population is unclear. Both sexes can produce a defensive stridulation when threatened, repeatedly flicking open their colorful hind wings. They also threaten attackers by raising the abdomen and spreading the hind legs, similar to the related genus *Haaniella*. If touched, the hind legs snap together like scissors, with the tibiae striking the femora, using their spines as an effective defense.

Contrary to a common belief, *Heteropteryx dilatata* does not lay the largest insect eggs. Its eggs are 0.7 to 0.8 centimeters long, 0.5 centimeters wide, and weigh about 70 milligrams. The heaviest eggs—250 to 300 milligrams—belong to the related *Haaniella echinata*, which are up to 1.2 centimeters long and 0.8 centimeters wide. Meanwhile, females of *Asceles malaccae*, which are under 10 centimeters long, lay eggs up to 1.5 centimeters long but only about 0.2 centimeters in diameter. Female *Heteropteryx dilatata* deposit their eggs individually into the ground using the ovipositor. Nymphs hatch after 7 to 14 months. They can change from a lighter color during the day to a darker one at night, and up to the fourth larval stage they form sleeping groups, clumping or chaining together on food plants. Newly hatched nymphs are beige. With each molt, males become slightly darker, while females shift from beige to green after the third molt. About a year after hatching, the final molt occurs—the fifth for males and the sixth for females. Adults then live for 6 to 24 months. As with many other stick insects, occasional gynanders (half-sided hermaphrodites) occur.

*Heteropteryx dilatata* is the only species in the genus *Heteropteryx*, which was established by George Robert Gray in 1835. The species itself was first described in 1798 by John Parkinson as *Phasma dilatatum*. The holotype—a female—is kept in the Macleay Museum at the University of Sydney. Other species once placed in *Heteropteryx*, such as *H. dehaanii*, *H. echinata*, *H. erringtoniae*, *H. grayii*, *H. muelleri*, *H. rosenbergii*, and *H. scabra*, have since been moved to the genus *Haaniella*, or have been recognized as synonyms of *H. dilatata* (including *H. castelnaudi*, *H. hopei*, and *H. rollandi*). The genus name *Leocrates*, introduced by Carl Stål in 1875 for *Leocrates graciosa* and later used by Josef Redtenbacher in 1906 for *Leocrates glaber* and *Leocrates mecheli*, is synonymous with *Heteropteryx*. The two species Redtenbacher described have been valid species of *Haaniella* again since 2016. Genetic studies by Sarah Bank and colleagues show that the tribe Heteropterigini forms a common clade, but *Heteropteryx* sits phylogenetically among several lineages currently listed in *Haaniella*. These studies also indicate that, besides the Malay *Heteropteryx dilatata*, there may be another species from Thailand’s Phang Nga Province.

Reproduction, Nymphal Development, and Gynandromorphy

A persistent myth holds that Heteropteryx dilatata produces the largest insect egg on record, but the heaviest eggs actually belong to the related Haaniella echinata, at two hundred fifty to three hundred milligrams. The true eggs of Heteropteryx measure roughly seven to eight millimetres in length, five millimetres in width, and weigh around seventy milligrams. Females deposit them singly into the soil using their ovipositor. After a gestation of seven to fourteen months, nymphs emerge in a pale beige hue. During their early larval stages—up to the fourth instar—these young insects form sleeping communities, clumping or chaining together on their food plants. They also shift colour between a lighter daytime shade and a darker nocturnal one. With successive moults, males gradually darken, while females transition from beige to green after their third moult. Approximately one year after hatching, the final moult produces the adult imago: the fifth moult for males and the sixth for females. Adults then survive for six to twenty-four months. Occasionally, gynanders appear—individuals that are half-sided hermaphrodites, blending male and female traits on opposite halves of the body.

Taxonomic History and Phylogenetic Placement

The holotype, a female specimen, resides in the Macleay Museum at the University of Sydney. Over the years, numerous other species once placed in Heteropteryx—such as H. dehaanii, H. echinata, H. erringtoniae, H. grayii, H. muelleri, H. rosenbergii, and H. scabra—were reassigned to the genus Haaniella, while others like H. castelnaudi, H. hopei, and H. rollandi proved to be mere synonyms of dilatata. Modern genetic work by Sarah Bank and colleagues revealed that Heteropteryx sits phylogenetically in the middle of several Haaniella lineages, and identified a previously unrecognized sibling species in Thailand's Khao Lak–Lam Ru National Park. Despite this monotypic status, the genus lends its name to the entire family Heteropterygidae.
