Gnathostomulid

Gnathostomulids, also called jaw worms, form a small phylum of nearly microscopic marine animals. They live in sand and mud just below shallow coastal waters and can tolerate environments with very little oxygen. Scientists first identified and described them in 1956.

Most jaw worms are between 0.5 and 1 millimeter long. Their bodies are slender, often thread-like, and generally transparent. In the Bursovaginoidea group, the neck is slightly narrower than the rest of the body, giving the animal a distinct head. Like flatworms, they have a ciliated outer layer, but unlike flatworms, each cell has only one cilium. These cilia let the worms glide through water between sand grains, and they also use muscles to twist or contract for movement.

Gnathostomulids have no body cavity, no circulatory system, and no respiratory system. Their nervous system is simple and limited to the outer layers of the body wall. Their only sense organs are modified cilia, which are especially common on the head. The mouth sits just behind the head, on the underside of the body, after a rostrum. It contains a pair of cuticular jaws powered by strong muscles, often with tiny teeth. A basal plate on the lower surface has a comb-like structure and is used to scrape smaller organisms off sand grains in their muddy, low-oxygen habitat. This bilaterally symmetrical pharynx with its complex cuticular mouth parts links them closely to rotifers and their relatives, forming the group Gnathifera. The ultrastructure of the jaws—rods with electron-dense cores visible under transmission electron microscopy—also supports a close relationship with Rotifera and Micrognathozoa. Two species in the genus Agnathiella (family Agnathiellidae) lack jaws entirely. The mouth opens into a blind-ending tube where digestion occurs; there is no true anus, though a tissue connection between the intestine and epidermis may act as an anal pore.

Gnathostomulids are simultaneous hermaphrodites. Each individual has one ovary and either one or two testes. After fertilization, the single egg breaks through the body wall and sticks to nearby sand particles; the parent quickly heals the wound. The egg hatches into a miniature version of the adult, with no larval stage.

About 100 species have been described, and many more likely remain unknown. Known species fall into two orders. Filospermoids are very long with an elongated rostrum. Bursovaginoids have paired sensory organs, a penis, and a sperm-storage organ called a bursa. Gnathostomulids have no known fossil record, though some researchers have noted debatable similarities between their jaws and certain conodont elements. They appear to be a sister clade to the Syndermata.
