Little Astro Boy (ろぼっとアトム, Robotto Atomu; lit. 'Robot Atom') is an anime television spin-off from the Astro Boy franchise, which was created by Osamu Tezuka. Targeted at preschool children, the show was a co-production between Tezuka Productions, Yomiuri TV Enterprise, and Nigeria’s Channels TV. The series consists of eight episodes, each running 11 minutes. It aired in English on Channels TV’s children’s programming block from March 22, 2014, to April 26, 2014. A bilingual DVD was later released in Japan on November 3, 2015.
At the 2013 Annecy International Animated Film Festival, Tezuka Productions disclosed early talks with international companies about local adaptations of Astro Boy. The most advanced project was a partnership with Nigeria’s Channels TV, aiming to “re-version” the brand. This international push, partly a response to Japan’s falling birth rates, was led by Makoto Tezuka and hoped to secure funding from the Cool Japan initiative. In January 2014, the series was officially announced.
