Juncus
A cosmopolitan genus of rushes with ecological and cultural significance.
Rushes, the plants of the genus *Juncus*, are herbaceous monocots that look a lot like grasses or sedges but are set apart by their flowers. Those flowers have five whorls of parts: three sepals, three petals (which together form six tepals), two to six stamens, and a three-lobed stigma. Another giveaway is the stem: rushes have round stems, while sedges typically have triangular ones. Botanists haven't always been keen on them—James Ebenezer Bicheno called the genus "obscure and uninviting" in 1819. In some of the most common species, grouped in *Juncus* section *Juncotypus*, the leaves are reduced to sheaths at the stem's base, and the bract under the flower cluster looks like a continuation of the stem, making the inflorescence seem to grow from the side.
*Juncus* species grow almost everywhere on Earth except Antarctica. They favor cold or wet places; in the tropics, they're mostly found in mountains. Though usually wind-pollinated, some species might get help from insects. They thrive in wetlands like salt marshes and seeps, which puts them in contact with waterborne pollutants—research suggests planting certain rushes could help clean contaminated water. These plants are key players in their ecosystems, offering food and shelter for microbes, insects, amphibians, fish, and birds. Some species even alter the waterlogged soil around their roots, boosting oxygen and changing pH. Scientists have used rushes in studies on precipitation effects, salt tolerance, plant diversity, and microbial soil communities.
Fossil fruits of a *Juncus* species have turned up in middle Miocene deposits in Denmark. People around the world have put rushes to work: their fibrous stems are great for cordage, used by indigenous groups in California, South Africa, the Karabakh region, and pre-industrial Scandinavia for baskets and candle wicks. There are also medicinal uses, both traditional (in China and among indigenous Americans) and backed by modern science.
Carl Linnaeus named the genus in 1753, and Frederick Vernon Coville picked *Juncus acutus* as the type species in 1913. The genus splits into two main groups: one with cymose inflorescences that have bracteoles, and one with racemose inflorescences without them. In 2013, *Oreojuncus* was split off. A 2022 study suggested *Juncus* is paraphyletic and proposed splitting it into six new genera, but as of July 2025, only *Juncinella* is accepted by Plants of the World Online; the others are treated as synonyms. The genus is divided into subgenera and sections, including *Juncus* subg. *Juncus* (with sections like *Juncus*, *Graminei*, and *Ozophyllum*) and *Juncus* subg. *Poiophylli* (with sections like *Tenageia*, *Steirochloa*, and *Juncotypus*). As of July 2025, 342 species are accepted.
