History

The school traces its roots to two predecessor institutions. The first, Zhejiang Medical School, was founded in June 1911 (some sources say 1 June 1912) by Han Qing-quan and later became known as Zhejiang Provincial College of Medicine. The second, National Chekiang University School of Medicine, was founded in August 1945. In February 1952, these two were merged to form Zhejiang Medical College, which was promoted to Zhejiang Medical University in April 1964. In 1998, Zhejiang Medical University was reunified with three other universities sharing the same root—Hangzhou University, Zhejiang University, and Zhejiang Agricultural University—to establish the new Zhejiang University, and its faculty became the medical faculty of the new university. The old Hubin Campus was located next to West Lake; the present medical campus is the Zijingang Campus.

Faculties

The school has 966 full-time professors, including 451 Ph.D. supervisors and 1,001 Master's degree supervisors. The current Dean is Duan Shumin.

The school comprises five major departments: Basic Medicine, Public Health, Clinical Medicine, Dental Medicine, and Nursing, along with 7 affiliated teaching hospitals. It has 4 national key disciplines, 45 national key clinical specialties, 1 national key laboratory, 23 provincial key laboratories, and the "Medical Technology and Diseases Prevention" 985 Technology Innovation Platform. It collaborates with the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine in translational medicine and other areas, and with over 20 leading medical schools including Columbia University, the University of Melbourne, and the University of Toronto. In 2015, Zhejiang University and the University of Edinburgh Joint Institute began enrolling students.
