History

The football section of Silkeborg IF was established in 1917 and initially competed in the top ranks of Jutland, with a brief stint in the third division in 1962. In 1966 the team earned promotion to the 2nd division of Danish football. A decisive move toward professional top-level football came in 1982 with the founding of SIF Football Support A/S, a company tasked with managing professional football in Silkeborg. This led to promotion to the country's top division in 1987, a result that surprised many observers; a reporter from the newspaper Politiken remarked that it would be a surprise if Silkeborg even won a corner kick. Despite such skepticism, the team performed well, defeating the dominant side Brøndby 1–0 at home in the third match of the season.

A pivotal match in the 1993–94 season occurred in the third round at home against Brøndby. Shortly before the game, star player Jakob Kjeldberg had been sold to Chelsea, and Brøndby took a 2–0 lead early on. Silkeborg then turned the match around completely, winning 4–2 in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Over the remainder of the autumn, SIF lost only 2 of 18 matches and finished the half in first place.

The playoffs saw a shift to a more calculating style; away from home the team suffered several heavy defeats, but at Silkeborg Stadion they were formidable, winning six of seven home games and conceding only one goal. In the second-to-last round, SIF could have secured the championship with an away win against rival Copenhagen at Parken Stadium, where a record Superliga crowd of 26,679 watched. Silkeborg scored first but eventually lost 4–1. Going into the final round, SIF needed a better result than Copenhagen.

At home against AaB, Silkeborg won 2–0 with two goals from leading scorer Heine Fernandez, while OB defeated Copenhagen 3–2 in Odense on an injury-time goal, handing SIF the championship.
