Career

Tomáš Sršeň kicked off his hockey career in 1985 with TJ Zetor Brno and represented Czechoslovakia at the 1986 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. The Edmonton Oilers picked him in the seventh round of the 1987 NHL draft, but he stuck around in Czechoslovakia for another three years, suiting up for Zetor and HC Dukla Jihlava. He finally got into an NHL game with the Oilers during the 1990–91 season, though he only played twice and didn’t notch a single point. The bulk of that season and the entire next one he spent with Edmonton’s minor league affiliate, the Cape Breton Oilers. In 1992–93, he headed back to Europe, joining Leksands IF and later Rögle BK in Sweden’s Elitserien. While with Rögle, he snagged the Håkan Loob Trophy as the league’s top goal-scorer, netting 28 goals in 1993–94. He also suited up for the Czech Republic at the 1994 Winter Olympics and the 1994 and 1995 World Championships. Midway through the 1994–95 season, he returned home to play for HC Vsetín, where he stayed until 1999, helping the team reel off five straight Czech Extraliga titles. In 1999, he moved to Germany’s Deutsche Eishockey Liga with the Essen Mosquitoes, but that lasted just one season. He came back to the Czech Republic for the 1999–00 campaign, splitting time between HC Havířov and HC Vítkovice. After that, he had stops in Italy’s Serie A with HC Merano and Germany’s 2nd Bundesliga with EHC Wolfsburg. From 2002 to 2006, he bounced between HC Havířov and Norway’s Lillehammer IK, with a brief spell at HC Olomouc. He then played a season in Denmark for the Frederikshavn White Hawks before finishing his career with four seasons at HC Uničov in the Czech 2. Liga, retiring in 2011.
