Hockey career
LeMarque played Division I college hockey for Northern Michigan University from 1987 to 1991. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins at age 17 with the 224th pick in 1987. Most of his professional career was spent in France, where he won three consecutive national championships from 1994 to 1996, and in Germany. He represented France at the 1994 Winter Olympics, scoring one goal in five games, and at the IIHF World Championships in 1994 and 1995. He retired during the 1999–2000 season and took up snowboarding, focusing on the X-Games.
Later life
In February 2004, LeMarque became trapped in the Sierra Nevada Mountains wilderness. He survived eight days by living in a makeshift igloo and eating pine nuts and cedar, unable to find his way back to Mammoth Mountain Ski Area after hiking nearly 10 miles through deep snow and sub-freezing temperatures. Searchers found him conscious but barely moving; a helicopter crew located him via infrared imaging. He suffered severe frostbite, hypothermia, and dehydration, and doctors amputated his legs six inches below each knee. After a long recovery, he was fitted with modern prosthetics and relearned to use his legs. The 2017 film 6 Below: Miracle on the Mountain was based on his book Crystal Clear.
