Last updated

The Ashes of Eden is a Star Trek science fiction novel from the Shatnerverse series. It was co-written by William Shatner alongside Judith Reeves-Stevens and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, marking Shatner's first novel collaboration within the franchise. In its audio adaptation, the exact phrase "Beam me up, Scotty" is spoken for the first time anywhere in Star Trek.

Plot summary

After the Khitomer Conference, a disillusioned James T. Kirk resigns from Starfleet and accepts an offer from a woman named Teilani to protect her homeworld, Chal. Kirk uncovers a corrupt conspiracy involving rogue Starfleet and Klingon factions exploiting Chal's youth-restoring properties. He works with his former crew to thwart the plot, culminating in a space battle that destroys the USS Enterprise-A to save the planet.

Production

After publishing their book Federation, Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens were contacted by Pocket Books editor Kevin Ryan about collaborating with William Shatner on a new book. Shatner had just finished filming as James T. Kirk in Star Trek Generations, which depicted the character's death. Both Shatner and Pocket Books wanted Kirk's story to continue in novel form, so the novel was set immediately before the events of Generations. The manuscript received a positive response, and Pocket Books asked if a sequel was possible.
