History

The club was formed in 1969 after a gathering at the Railway pub, initially called Railway Rangers. A committee managed the team in its early years as it joined the Oswestry & District League. A rename to Ellesmere Rangers occurred in 1974, and promotion to the Shrewsbury & West Shropshire League followed the 1974–75 season. The Shropshire Junior Cup was won in 1980–81, a 2–1 victory over Weston United at Gay Meadow.

During the 1980s the club moved up to the Shropshire County League, which it won in 2003–04, earning promotion to Division Two of the West Midlands (Regional) League. A fourth-place finish in Division Two led to promotion to Division One, and the club won Division One in 2005–06 to reach the Premier Division. Ellesmere claimed the Premier Division title in 2009–10, securing promotion to the Midland Alliance, and also won the Shropshire Challenge Cup that season by defeating Market Drayton Town at the New Meadow.

The next season saw the club win the Shropshire Premier Cup, beating AFC Bridgnorth 4–2 in the final. At the end of 2017–18 the club was transferred to Division One South of the North West Counties League. In June 2023 Ellesmere resigned from the North West Counties League, citing a lack of a suitable managerial team and financial concerns, and dropped into the Premier Division of the Shropshire County League.
