Lore & Background
Devola and her sister Popola are twin sisters who lead the village built within post-industrial ruins. They assign the protagonist odd jobs to help him earn money to care for the ailing Yonah. Over a thousand years after the events that left Earth in ruin, they guide the protagonist in his search for a cure for Yonah's terminal Black Scrawl disease. However, their true nature is eventually revealed: they are androids created to oversee the system of Replicants (artificial bodies) and Gestalts (human souls). 1300 years prior, humanity faced extinction due to an incurable disease and separated their souls from their bodies. Devola and Popola's role is to maintain this system, and they ally with the Shadowlord—the prime Gestalt used to stabilize others—in service of this greater plan. When the protagonist's party assembles the stone key and prepares to face the Shadowlord, Devola and Popola confront them, forcing a battle.
In Their Own Story
For much of the game, Devola and Popola appear as helpful village leaders, assigning tasks and offering guidance. The turning point comes after the protagonist's party gathers the parts of a stone key meant to unlock a pathway to the Shadowlord. At that moment, Devola and Popola confront the party, revealing their true allegiance. They explain that 1300 years prior, humanity faced extinction from an incurable disease and separated their souls (Gestalts) from their bodies (Replicants). The current humans are artificial Replicant bodies who developed their own personalities, while the Shades are human Gestalts slowly losing their minds. The Black Scrawl is a side effect of the Gestalts' insanity degrading their Replicant counterparts. Devola and Popola, as androids overseeing this system, have been allied with the Shadowlord—the prime Gestalt—to maintain stability. The party defeats the twins, with Emil sacrificing himself in the process.
