Toews was selected third overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2006 NHL entry draft after playing two seasons at the University of North Dakota, where he helped the team reach the NCAA Frozen Four in both 2006 and 2007. He debuted with the Blackhawks in 2007–08, scoring his first NHL goal on his first shot in his first game, and recorded a point in each of his first ten games. He was nominated for the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year that season. In July 2008, at age 20, he was named team captain, becoming the second-youngest captain in NHL history at the time (after Sidney Crosby).
