The Tampa Bay Lightning, often called the Bolts, are a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL). Based in Tampa, Florida, they play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. Their home games are held at Benchmark International Arena in Downtown Tampa. Along with the Florida Panthers, they are one of two NHL teams based in the state. The franchise is owned by Vinik Sports Group, with a majority stake held by an investor group led by Doug Ostrover and Marc Lipschultz. Jeffrey Vinik remains chairman and governor during a transition period. Julien BriseBois serves as general manager, and Jon Cooper has been head coach since March 2013, making him the longest-tenured active head coach in the NHL.
The team was founded as an expansion franchise on December 6, 1990, and started play in the 1992–93 season. They have won three Stanley Cup championships, in 2004, 2020, and 2021, and also appeared in the Stanley Cup Final in 2015 and 2022. Their sustained success from 2015 to 2022 led some to call them a modern NHL dynasty. In the 2018–19 season, they won the Presidents' Trophy after tying the all-time record for regular-season wins with 62.
Hockey came to Tampa through a competitive expansion bid in the late 1980s. Two rival groups from the Tampa Bay Area sought an NHL franchise: one from St. Petersburg, led by future Hurricanes owners Peter Karmanos Jr. and Jim Rutherford, and another from Tampa, fronted by brothers Phil and Tony Esposito and Mel Lowell. The Esposito group initially had backing from the Pritzker family, but they withdrew months before the bid. A consortium of Japanese businesses led by Kokusai Green, a golf course and resort operator, stepped in. While the Karmanos group appeared financially stronger, it only wanted to pay $29 million of the $50 million expansion fee upfront. The Esposito group, willing to pay the full fee, won the franchise on December 6, 1990, naming the team the Lightning after Tampa Bay’s reputation as the "Lightning Capital of North America."
Phil Esposito became president and general manager, Tony Esposito chief scout, and Mel Lowell executive vice-president and treasurer. Terry Crisp, a former player and coach with Stanley Cup wins, was hired as the first head coach.
