The club's origins trace to Stanley Cricket Club of Byker in November 1881, which became Newcastle East End in 1882. Across the city, Newcastle West End formed in 1882 and moved to St James' Park in 1886. East End turned professional in 1889 and became a limited company in 1890. In spring 1892, West End faced financial trouble and wound up; East End took over St James' Park lease and some players and staff. The merged club adopted the name Newcastle United on 9 December 1892, accepted by the FA on 22 December, and legally constituted as a limited company on 6 September 1895. They entered the Football League Second Division in 1893–94.
