The 2000-2003 Post-Dynasty Struggle
The New York Mets: A legacy of blue and orange, from the Miracle of '69 to the championship of '86.
The New York Mets are an American professional baseball team based in the New York City borough of Queens. The Mets compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) East Division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City alongside the American League (AL)'s New York Yankees. One of baseball's first expansion teams, the Mets were founded in 1962 to replace New York's departed NL teams, the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants. The team's colors evoke the blue of the Dodgers and the orange of the Giants.
Lore & Background
The Mets were founded in 1962 after the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants relocated to California. The team's nickname 'Mets' is a shorthand for the 'New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc.', referencing the earlier 'Metropolitans' team. The Mets played at the Polo Grounds in 1962 and 1963, then at Shea Stadium from 1964 to 2008, and have played at Citi Field since 2009. The 'Miracle Mets' won the 1969 World Series, and the team won a second World Series in 1986. The Mets have won five National League pennants and six NL East division titles. Since 2020, the team has been owned by Steve Cohen.
