Early life
Mark Travis John Sanchez was born in Long Beach, California, to Nick Sr. and Olga Sanchez. His parents divorced when he was four, and he lived with his father and brothers Nick Jr. and Brandon, though his mother remained involved. The family initially lived in Whittier and Pico Rivera; when Sanchez was six, his father moved with the children to Rancho Santa Margarita, a predominantly white city in Orange County. His father remarried and raised the boys strictly, seeking to develop leadership.
He combined athletic and mental training, having Mark dribble a basketball while reciting multiplication tables or practice baseball swings while answering questions about the periodic table, aiming to build quick thinking and self-confidence. By eighth grade, Sanchez was interested in football but unsure of his position. His father consulted coaches Bill Cunerty and Bob Johnson, who said Sanchez could be a quarterback if he applied himself. Sanchez attended Santa Margarita High School and joined the football team; as a sophomore, his first varsity pass attempt was a 55-yard touchdown.
Before his junior year, he transferred to Mission Viejo High School, where Johnson, known as a quarterback guru who had trained professionals like Carson Palmer, was head coach. Under Johnson, Sanchez led the Diablos to a 27–1 record and a California Interscholastic Federation Division II championship in 2004. He was named football player of the year by several major recruiting services and was considered the top quarterback in the nation after his high school career ended in 2005.
College career
Sanchez arrived at USC as the nation's top quarterback prospect. In April 2006, he was arrested after a female student accused him of sexual assault; he was released the next day and suspended. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's office declined to file charges on June 3, 2006, and Sanchez was reinstated, though disciplined for underage drinking and using false identification. During the 2006 season, he competed for the starting job; when Booty required back surgery, Sanchez ran the first-team offense in spring, but coaches said Booty would start upon return.
Sanchez saw limited playing time against Arkansas, Stanford, and Oregon, completing three of seven passes for 63 yards and an interception, and appeared in games against Arizona, Michigan, and Notre Dame without attempting a pass. Before the 2007 season, he broke his right thumb and missed the first game. He returned as Booty's backup, then was named starter by Pete Carroll after Booty broke a finger in a loss to Stanford.
Professional career
Sanchez hired his older brother Nick Sanchez Jr., a business litigator, as his agent alongside David Dunn. He performed well at the 2009 Scouting Combine and was ranked among the top two quarterbacks behind Matthew Stafford. The New York Jets selected him fifth overall in the 2009 NFL draft, trading first- and second-round picks plus three players to the Cleveland Browns. He signed a five-year, $50 million contract with $28 million guaranteed, the largest in Jets history.
Entering training camp, Sanchez was second behind Kellen Clemens; on August 26, 2009, he was named starter, the first rookie quarterback to start for the Jets since Dick Jamieson in 1960. After a subpar first season, he led the Jets to the AFC Championship Game, losing to the Indianapolis Colts. In his second season, he again reached the AFC Championship Game, losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers, joining Ben Roethlisberger as the only quarterbacks to reach the conference championship in their first two seasons.
The next two seasons saw regression; he was replaced by Greg McElroy late in 2012. A preseason shoulder injury in 2013 ended his season, and he was released. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, started after Nick Foles was injured, and set career highs in completion percentage and passer rating, but could not reestablish himself as a starter. He spent one season each as a backup for the Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, and Washington Redskins before retiring after 2018.
Personal life
Sanchez is an avid fan of musical theatre and was a presenter at the 2010 Tony Awards, introducing a number from the Broadway musical Memphis. He has been involved with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Sam's Club's Giving Made Simple, which addresses childhood obesity. He also worked with the Teddy Atlas Foundation, through which he met Aiden Binkley, an 11-year-old with rhabdomyosarcoma; they remained close until Binkley's death in December 2010.
His father is a fire captain for the Orange County Fire Authority and a member of the national urban search and rescue team, and played quarterback at East Los Angeles College before serving as a U.S. Army sergeant. His older brothers both played college football: Nick Jr. at Yale University and Brandon at DePauw University. Nick Jr. attended USC Law School and is a business attorney; Brandon became a mortgage broker. Sanchez dated model Hilary Rhoda; they appeared in a GQ photo shoot.
On May 28, 2023, he married actress Perry Mattfeld. In June 2016, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission alleged that his broker conducted a ponzi-like scheme that defrauded Sanchez, Roy Oswalt, and Jake Peavy out of $30 million. On October 4, 2025, Sanchez was stabbed during an altercation in downtown Indianapolis at 12:30 a.m. EDT and was hospitalized in critical condition. He was arrested on charges including battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle, and public intoxication; the battery charge was later upgraded to a felony.
