The turning point for Salaam and the Jets arrived in 1981 with the full emergence of the "New York Sack Exchange." The synergy between Salaam, Klecko, Gastineau, and Lyons transformed the franchise's fortunes, culminating in a playoff berth. The following year, in the 1982 season, the team advanced again, though they ultimately fell to the Miami Dolphins in the AFC Championship game. Salaam's tenure with New York concluded abruptly after that run; his only appearance in 1983 was a 34–14 loss to the Dolphins in Miami during the final game of the season, dropping the Jets' record to 7–9. In the subsequent off-season, he was traded alongside Kenny Neil to the San Diego Chargers for a 1984 second-round draft pick. Despite the trade, neither player ever suited up for San Diego. Following his NFL career, Salaam returned to the game as a high school football coach before passing away in Cincinnati on October 8, 2024.
