Thomas Hickey
Islanders defenceman claimed off waivers in 2013, now part of the team's MSG Network broadcasts.
Thomas Robert Hickey (born February 8, 1989) is a Canadian broadcaster and former professional ice hockey player who played defence for the New York Islanders in the NHL. He was selected fourth overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the first round of the 2007 NHL entry draft. After being claimed off waivers by the Islanders on January 15, 2013, he made his NHL debut later that month against the Winnipeg Jets. Hickey scored his first NHL goal on February 21, 2013, an overtime winner against the Montreal Canadiens.
In the 2015–16 season, he netted another overtime winner against the Washington Capitals that clinched a playoff spot for the Islanders, and two weeks later scored his first playoff goal in overtime against the Florida Panthers. After signing a four-year contract with the Islanders in 2018, Hickey lost his roster spot due to injury and the emergence of Devon Toews, was waived, and spent most of the remainder of his contract with the AHL affiliate Bridgeport Islanders.
He was loaned to the Ontario Reign to finish his final professional season. Hickey also represented Canada at the World Junior Championships, winning gold medals in 2008 and 2009, captaining the 2009 team. Following a 12-year professional playing career, he joined the MSG Network’s Islanders broadcast team on October 27, 2022. In 2024, he was announced as an analyst and between-the-benches reporter for Prime Monday Night Hockey, while continuing his MSG work.
