Bobby Hebert

The Cajun Cannon who quarterbacked the Saints' first winning, playoff team.

Bobby Joseph Hebert Jr. (born August 19, 1960) is an American sportscaster and former professional quarterback who played from 1983 to 1996 in the USFL and NFL for the Michigan Panthers, Oakland Invaders, New Orleans Saints, and Atlanta Falcons. Known as "the Cajun Cannon," he guided the Panthers to a USFL championship in the league's first season and later helped the Saints achieve their first winning season and playoff appearance in franchise history. Hebert entered the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. He now hosts an afternoon radio show on WWL AM 870 and WWL-FM 105.3 in New Orleans.

In the USFL, Hebert ranked among the league's top quarterbacks. He won the 1983 championship with the Michigan Panthers by beating the Philadelphia Stars 24–22. After injuries hurt the team in 1984, they lost in triple overtime to Steve Young's Los Angeles Express, 27–21. When the Panthers merged with the Oakland Invaders in 1985, Hebert led them back to the finals, but the Stars won 28–24. Over three USFL seasons, he completed 773 of 1,407 passes for 13,137 yards, making him the league's all-time leader in passing yardage. Hebert recalled that the Panthers were more popular than the Detroit Lions in their heyday and believed his team could have ranked among the NFL's top 14, noting that many Panthers starters later played in the NFL.

In the NFL, Hebert split time with Dave Wilson in 1985 and 1986 for the Saints. He became the starter in 1987, with John Fourcade as backup. On November 20, 1988, he completed 20 of 23 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns in a 42–0 win over the Denver Broncos, earning NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors. He sat out the 1990 season due to a contract dispute. In 1991 and 1992, he led the Saints to strong starts and playoff appearances, and he appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated on October 7, 1991. Hebert signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 1993 and made the Pro Bowl that year. He backed up Jeff George in 1994 and 1995, then started again in 1996 before retiring.

His niece, Erin, is married to former LSU quarterback Myles Brennan. His son, T-Bob Hebert, played football at LSU and now works for Barstool Sports.
