Production
Before landing at Netflix, the show was first offered to NBC, which passed. Universal Television then took it elsewhere until Netflix picked it up, leading to Randall Park being cast as the lead. Netflix had already secured streaming rights to the 2020 documentary The Last Blockbuster. The series was officially announced on November 17, 2021, with Vanessa Ramos—known for Superstore and Brooklyn Nine-Nine—as its creator. Production came from Davis Entertainment and Universal Television. Writers included David Caspe and Jackie Clarke, with John Davis serving as an executive producer under Davis Entertainment. Clarke, Caspe, John Fox, and Ramos also held executive producer roles, while Bridger Winegar and Robert Petrovic were co-executive producers. In February 2022, Payman Benz was set to direct four episodes, including the pilot, and executive produce those. Aleysa Young and Katie Locke O'Brien also directed first-season episodes, with Rick Page as cinematographer. A first look debuted on May 5, 2022, during the Netflix Is A Joke festival, featuring a promo with Fumero and Park's characters. The series premiered on November 3, 2022, but Netflix canceled it after one season on December 16, 2022.
