Synopsis
Oceanographer Laura Daughtery is attacked by an unknown life-form during a submersible dive in the North Pacific Ocean. In North Carolina, teenager Miles Barnett encounters a strange sea creature after falling from his wakeboard. Richard Connelly loses his brother to a suspicious diving accident in the Gulf of Mexico. Worldwide, unusual oceanic events occur: shooting stars fall into the Caribbean, a lighthouse in South Africa hears a horrific howl, and an unknown carcass washes ashore in South Carolina, which the government claims is a beached whale killed by red tide. Daughtery's research is seized by officials led by Dr. Aleksander Cirko, and she is fired. Miles finds pods he calls eggs in the water and takes one home. Connelly travels to South Carolina and meets Daughtery after both are detained for asking questions. Miles's egg hatches, and the creature escapes at a pool party. Daughtery and Connelly retrieve a hagfish that fed on the carcass and send its stomach contents for testing. Reports of creatures beaching themselves worldwide begin to emerge.
