Plot

Three young men—Tom, Vern, and Wes—share a houseboat called Elephant on the Ohio River. Tom, nicknamed Tom-Tom, is from Chicago; Vern hails from North Carolina; Wes is a local. Their boat is moored near Mr. Stott’s service station, where the grumpy owner acts as a father figure. Wes has a serious girlfriend, Irene, who attends Cordella College with him and Tom. Wes’s orphaned little brother, Howie, also lives aboard, and a custody rule demands a proper upbringing, which often frustrates the fun-loving guys.

Aftermath

After the show was cancelled in mid-January 1963, Glenn Corbett found work almost immediately on the already-airing series Route 66, which explored similar themes of restlessness and idealism. Corbett began his co-starring role as Lincoln Case on Route 66 in March 1963. In 1977, ABC revisited the premise with The San Pedro Beach Bums, a 60-minute sitcom about five young men on a houseboat, which also lasted only ten episodes.
