History

Adelaide Comets FC is a soccer club from Adelaide, South Australia, based in the western suburb of Mile End. The team plays its home matches at LJ Hooker Mile End Sports Park and competes in the National Premier Leagues South Australia. The club began in 1994 as Adelaide Raiders Soccer Club, playing in the South Australian Amateur Soccer League. In its first season, the Raiders won the SAASL Saturday Division 2 championship and moved up to Division 1. By 1997, they were the top amateur side in the state, winning the Saturday Division 1 title. In 2001, the club entered five teams into the South Australian Soccer Federation’s Junior Premier League. That same year, to avoid confusion with another local club called Adelaide Raiders (formerly Adelaide Croatia Raiders), the name changed to Adelaide Comets. The senior team kept winning, taking consecutive SAASL championships in 2001, 2002, and 2003. This success pushed the club to seek a higher league, but several attempts to join the SASF competition failed. When a new governing body took over, Adelaide Comets entered the newly formed State League in 2006 under Football Federation South Australia. Today, the club is one of the largest junior-focused clubs in South Australia, with 370 junior players. It also fields three SAASL amateur men’s teams, an FFSA Open Age Women’s team, and a senior squad that climbed through the FFSA State and Premier Leagues to reach the top division, the FFSA Super League. In total, the club has nearly 500 registered players. In 2018, the Comets reached the FFSA Federation Cup final by beating Cumberland United 3-2 in the semi-final. They then defeated Croydon Kings in the final, earning a spot in the round of 32 of the 2018 FFA Cup. On July 25, 2018, they beat Football West State League 1 side Gwelup Croatia to advance to the round of 16. The club’s promotion history includes entering the FFSA State League in 2006, winning the State League title in 2007 to gain promotion to the FFSA Premier League. In 2008, they finished third after winning only one of their last seven games. In 2009, they finished fourth and won an elimination final against Croydon Kings 2-1 before losing to Cumberland United. In 2010, they narrowly missed promotion again, losing to Croydon in a decisive match. Finally, in 2011, the Comets won the FFSA Premier League title with a 2-1 victory over Enfield City Falcons on the last day of the regular season, securing promotion to the FFSA Super League.

Promotion

In 2005 the club had been introduced into the newly formed FFSA State League moving on from the SAASL into the FFSA. Year 2007 saw The Comets gain promotion to the FFSA Premier League the second tier of South Australian football, after winning the State League Title within two seasons. Remarkably in 2008 The Comets were heading for promotion to the Super League but by only winning 1 out of their last 7 games they finished the season 3rd. In just their first season in the Premier League after coming to close to making the states first division, The Comets set their sights on becoming a Super League side. The Comets had a slow start to the year in 2009 but ended up finishing 4th by winning their last 7 out of 8 games and qualified into the top 5 finals competition. They then beat Croydon Kings 2–1 in the elimination final, only to lose against Cumberland United. The following year in 2010 would see the side yet again narrowly miss promotion after a defeat to Croydon in a winner gets promoted thriller. In 2011 The Comets was promoted into the FFSA Super League after a 2–1 victory over the Enfield City Falcons on the last day of regular season at Rushworth Reserve, winning the FFSA Premier League title.
