Swizz Beatz gained recognition at age 18 through his family's record label Ruff Ryders Entertainment and his affiliation with DMX. He sold his first beat to DMX at age 17, which became 'Ruff Ryders' Anthem' on DMX's 1998 debut album It's Dark and Hell is Hot. He then produced major hip-hop songs in 1998 including 'Banned from T.V.' by Noreaga and 'Money, Cash, Hoes' by Jay-Z. In 2001, he launched his own label imprint Full Surface Records in a joint venture with Clive Davis, signing acts like Cassidy, Eve, Mashonda and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. His production credits span hip-hop, pop, soul, rock, and R&B, including 'Upgrade U', 'Check on It', 'Ring the Alarm' (Beyoncé), 'Bring 'Em Out' (T.I.), 'Hotel' (Cassidy), 'Touch It' (Busta Rhymes), 'Fancy' (Drake), 'Famous' (Kanye West), and 'Uproar' (Lil Wayne). He has won one Grammy Award from five nominations.
