Ma bong
A shapeshifting horse spirit from Lanna folklore.
Ma bong, also called Phi Ma bong or simply Phi Ma, is a supernatural spirit from the beliefs of the Lanna people of northern Thailand. Its appearance varies: some accounts describe it with the lower body of a horse and the upper body of a human male, said to be the spirit of men who never had sexual partners; others depict it as the spirit of a dead horse, or as a beautiful woman with a horse's lower body who lures young men to their deaths. A consistent detail is its association with horses, marked by sounds of neighing and galloping, and its disappearance leaving only horse tracks. A well-known Lanna folk tale tells of two young friends, one of whom becomes a Ma bong after being seen licking a dried buffalo head; the creature is described with the upper body of a man and the lower body of a horse.
