In 2008, the American musical film *Repo! The Genetic Opera* hit screens as a gothic rock opera. Darren Lynn Bousman directed the movie, which adapts a 2002 stage musical written and composed by Darren Smith and Terrance Zdunich. Set in 2056, an epidemic of organ failures has killed 99% of humanity. The megacorporation GeneCo offers organ transplants on a payment plan; clients who default are hunted by Repo Men, skilled assassins who repossess the organs. GeneCo’s CEO, Rotti Largo, learns he is terminally ill. His children Luigi, Pavi, and Amber squabble over the inheritance, but Rotti considers none worthy and instead plans to leave his fortune to 17-year-old Shilo Wallace, daughter of his late ex-fiancée Marni.
Shilo has inherited a rare blood disease from Marni, forcing her to stay indoors, though she longs to see the outside world. Her overprotective father Nathan believes he accidentally killed Marni with a treatment he created for her illness—in truth, a jealous Rotti poisoned Marni’s medicine and blackmailed Nathan into becoming GeneCo’s head Repo Man, while Nathan tells Shilo he is a doctor. One night, Shilo secretly visits Marni’s tomb and meets the omniscient GraveRobber, who digs up bodies for Zydrate, a euphoric painkiller he sells to keep up with his GeneCo payments.
Rotti lures Shilo to GeneCo’s fair with promises of a cure. There she meets Blind Mag, an opera singer and GeneCo’s celebrity spokesperson, who was born blind and given surgically enhanced eyes by GeneCo in exchange for indefinite employment—though she is about to resign. GraveRobber helps Shilo escape the fairgrounds, where she encounters several of his customers, including the surgery-addicted Amber. Shilo learns Mag’s eyes are set for repossession due to her resignation and that Amber will replace her as spokeswoman.
