Six Great Gods

The six original deities whose creation and conflict shaped the world's history.

The Six Great Gods are the six original deities who created the world and later fought in the Great War in the Mushoku Tensei universe. Often depicted as benevolent creators, they are primarily worshipped by humans who follow the Church of the Six Great Gods, though not all races or demi-humans share this belief—beast races, for instance, often worship their own gods. Their influence is world-spanning, not limited to a single continent, and their legacy shapes the broader lore through ancient myths and historical events.

Lore & Background

However, the true nature of these deities has long been a subject of debate among scholars and theologians. While the Church preaches that they are benevolent creators who watch over mortals with love, ancient texts and hidden histories suggest a more complex reality involving manipulation and conflict. The figure known as the Demon God Laplace—originally one of the Six Great Gods, the Dragon God, before his transformation—plays a key role in these events, but there is no category of 'Demon Gods' that counterbalance the Six Great Gods as a group.

Reader's Guide

Long before the current era of peace and magic academies, the world was shaped by the direct intervention of the Six Great Gods. Mythology states they forged the continents from chaos, establishing Asura as their primary domain while leaving other lands in relative neglect or under different influences. The separation of races into humans, demi-humans, and monsters is attributed to their divine design, each group given specific traits and territories to maintain a fragile balance.

This order was not always peaceful; ancient wars between the Gods' followers and the forces of the Demon Gods scarred the land, creating barriers that still exist today. Over millennia, the direct presence of these deities faded into myth, replaced by their avatars and the Church's interpretation of their will. The history of the world is essentially a chronicle of how mortals navigated the shifting tides between the benevolent influence of the Six Great Gods and the chaotic threats from their eternal rivals.
