The two teams first met in an IPL final in 2013, when Mumbai Indians defeated Chennai Super Kings by 23 runs at Eden Gardens to win their maiden IPL title. They met again in the 2015 final, where Mumbai Indians won by 41 runs to secure their second IPL title. In 2019, Mumbai Indians beat Chennai Super Kings by 1 run on 12 May 2019 in the IPL Final to win a record-breaking fourth IPL title. The rivalry intensified as CSK struck back, winning the 2021 final by 27 runs and the 2023 final by 5 wickets (DLS method), making the most recent final between the two sides the 2023 clash.
