History

The Motorsport Industry Association (MIA) is a worldwide trade body serving the motorsport, performance engineering, services, and tuning fields. It addresses the distinct requirements of this rapidly evolving global sector. While the bulk of Britain's motorsport industry clusters in Motorsport Valley—a term inspired by Silicon Valley and located around Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire—the MIA itself is based in Warwickshire. The MIA holds Motorsport Valley as a registered trademark, owned collectively for its members.

Function

The Motorsport Industry Association (MIA) speaks for the UK’s motorsport sector nationwide. Roughly 4,000 British companies operate in this field, generating about £9 billion annually, with exports making up around 70% of that figure. The industry invests 30% of its turnover in research and development, and employs some 25,000 qualified engineers. Brian Sims, formerly marketing director for Benetton and Lola in Formula One, founded the MIA. Chris Aylett became its CEO in 1997. Each year, the MIA and the Motor Sports Association jointly promote National Motorsport Week, which runs from late June. The celebration kicks off with the Goodwood Festival of Speed and concludes with the British Formula One Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Structure

The Motorsport Industry Association (MIA) was created in April 1994 by prominent figures from British motorsport who wanted a trade body to champion the UK’s highly successful motorsport sector. The idea came from founder and first CEO Brian Sims. The inaugural executive committee included Rob Baldock from Accenture, Dick Scammel of Cosworth, Tony Schulp from Haymarket, John Kirkpatrick of the Jim Russell Racing Drivers School, Tony Panaro of Euro Northern Travel, and Tony Fletcher from Premier Fuels. In 2015, after stepping down as a Defence Minister, the Rt Hon the Lord Astor of Hever, PC, DL became Honorary MIA President for a second time. The MIA has steadily grown its international business network, and now has nearly 400 global members whose companies handle over £9 billion in motorsport business each year.
